There are many excellent resources for starting a new cattery.
We are fortunate that the Siberian breed has several excellent
organizations strongly geared toward breeding and showing cats.
Databases like PawPeds provide
pedigree ancestry and inbreeding levels.
Even so, both new and
experienced breeders face both challenges and decisions. Siberian Research
provides pedigree evaluations and support services on an inexpensive fee
basis to active SRI members.
²
Setting reasonable expectations for the first years of breeding.
²
Establishing and prioritizing goals for a breeding program.
²
Finding breeders who offer support after you purchase a kitten.
²
Selecting lines best suited to your current breeding plans.
²
Reviewing pedigrees for potential genetic risk factors.
²
Resolving health issues that present themselves in your cattery.
²
Understanding the changing market for low-allergen cats.
All members to SRI may request one free
complete pedigree review. This will include a risk analysis of
HCM, PKD and any other genetic issues known to be present in the
pedigree. Note: Specific cats in the ancestry are usually not named, but
only the risk percentages.
If a cattery has the misfortune of dealing with HCM or another
genetic disease, please contact a board member directly.
In these cases, we do not require SRI membership. We can offer free confidential support and help in
understanding the issues, isolating the lines, and reviewing any potential impact on your cattery.
Feel free to call or email us.
