| Siberian Research dedicates this page to
cats that have died or been diagnosed with HCM. We also offer a
memorial page for pet owners or breeders who wish to submit a photograph
in memory of a loss to HCM. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) has been
documented as a hereditary trait in the Siberian breed. It is a
devastating illness that can show at any age. Lines carrying HCM have
been identified, and WSU has begun studies searching for specific genes
causing Siberian HCM.
The records below have been openly released or published by the
sources noted. In many cases SRI was asked to publish the
information. Information has been collected from open source records,
breeder websites, and records that were submitted directly to SRI.
Open source records include: SäSK - Sällskapet Sibirisk Katt,
PawPeds and
Gesundheit von Rassekatzen
(G.R.).
Records may include ultrasound by cardiologists, necropsy by medical
centers, or veterinary observation at time of death which may or may not
include necropsy. Because HCM may have different presentations,
equivocal HCM cases as well as DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) and FHC
(focal hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) have also been listed.
Listings are the based on the opinion of the professional who signed
the record. SRI recognizes that both echocardiograms and necropsies are
subject to professional interpretation.
We thank breeders and pet owners who have openly discussed and
disclosed information about HCM cases. By understanding risks,
performing echocardiograms, supporting genetic research, and using
careful breeding practices, we can reduce the number of Siberians with
this disease.
